Where is Hanley International Academy?

Hanley International Academy has 1 campus located at 2400 Denton Street, Hamtramck, MI 48212. The school offers education for PreK – 8th grade. 

What type of school is it?

Hanley International Academy is a charter school that was established in August of 2005. The charter is through Grand Valley State University and the management company is The Romine Group.  

Will my child be able to attend?

Charter schools are public schools of choice. Hanley International Academy is an innovative public school that operates under a contract or charter from Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Michigan. Hanley International Academy has established an open enrollment period. Hanley International Academy will accept applications during the advertised open enrollment time period. If more applications are received than slots are available, a lottery will be held to determine those whose applications are accepted. If your child is not accepted in the lottery process, they will be put on the waitlist in the order they are selected.

Is there an age requirement for Pre-kindergarten and/or kindergarten?

Yes. Our Pre-kindergarten program requires that your child be 4 years old prior to December 1st. All Kindergarten students must be 5 years old prior to December 1st.

What will my child learn in grades Pre-kindergarten through grade eight?

As a public school, we are held to the high standards set by the Michigan Department of Education. We are also held accountable by our authorizer (GVSU) and our management company (The Romine Group, Inc.)
Our curriculum is aligned to the state standards and benchmarks. Our focus is on English Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics; we also incorporate Science, Social Studies, and Fine Arts classes: Physical Education, Music and Technology. Hanley International Academy also boasts about our Character Education themed instruction, which consists of the following: Respect, Responsibility, Citizenship, Integrity, Perseverance, Compassion, Wisdom, Loyalty and Cooperation.

Who will teach my child?

Teachers and the professional support staff of Hanley International Academy work as a team in support of your child’s academic and personal growth. The professional teaching faculty holds college/university degrees, and 100% of our teaching staff is state certified. All paraprofessionals meet the rigid standards for paraprofessionals as outlined in the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

How will I know if my child is successful at Hanley International Academy?

Students at Hanley International Academy are required to demonstrate mastery of the grade appropriate exit skills in the school’s curriculum. Parents will also receive trimester updates (3 times per school year) on their child’s progress. We rely on scores from the MEAP and also assess our students utilizing a norm-based standardized test called the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) three times a year. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in the scheduled parent/teacher conferences throughout the school year.

How can parents get involved in the daily life of the school?

The involvement of the parent/legal guardians in the life of the school is very important and necessary for the success of the student. All parents are encouraged to become members of the Hanley Parent Organization. The HPO supports the mission of the school by supporting the academic, social and learning atmosphere of the school. Opportunities will be available throughout the school year to volunteer. Parents/guardians are encouraged to remain in close contact with the teachers involved in their child’s education.

How much does this cost?

There is no tuition charged for attending Hanley International Academy. Hanley International Academy is a public school and receives funds from the state of Michigan and from the United States federal government to cover operational costs.

Is there a uniform dress code?

Students wear colored uniform shirts (long & short sleeves available; Youth & Adult sizes XS –XXL) purchased from Hanley International Academy only. The uniform is completed by the parent purchasing, at-will (utilize local uniform stores), slacks/skirts and black dress/casual shoes. Athletic-type shoes can only be worn as physical education apparel. Complete details and updates will be discussed at the orientation meetings.

Is there transportation available?

Bus service will be offered from the previous Poland & Hanley street schools.  

Is there a lunch program?

Yes, nutritional hot lunches are served on a daily basis for a fee, unless your family qualifies for the Federal free or reduced lunch program (based upon application approval and federal guidelines).

Is there an after school program and/or latchkey program available?

Yes, Hanley International Academy offers the following before and after school programs:
- The school also offers a breakfast program.
- 21st Century after school program (Kid Zone) offering enrichment activities, academic tutoring and competitive athletic/sports activities.
- No latchkey program is available.
